Escalating high school dropout rates!

Dropout rates continue to rise in many of our communities across the country. During the 2006-2007 school year in Massachusetts, Public High Schools experienced a 3.8% dropout rate. However, many communities within Massachusetts were struggling with much higher truancy and dropout out rates. Boston, Brockton, Fall River, Holyoke, Lawrence, New Bedford, and Springfield all had dropout rates above the statewide average. A few of those community experienced double digit dropout rates.

"Every 29 seconds another student gives up on school.

"More than one million American high school students drop out each year."

"More than one half of all African-American, Hispanic, and Native American students fail to graduate with their high school class."

"Drop outs are more likely than high school graduates to be unemployed, in poor health, living in poverty, on public assistance, and single parents.."
